What things are essential for success and making the most out of college? If you were to go back in time to your college days, what things would you do and what wouldn't you do?

What got me through was the need to finish as quickly as possible and get a job as I had no means of support other than myself. I knew I needed to get good grades as that would ensure a better chance of future success, and also possibly lead to a scholarship for further study (which it did). So I guess my motivation was mainly that I had only me to depend upon and no safety net there if I didn't do well.

If I had it to do again, I might explore a variety of avenues, and not feel that I was tied to one path. Knowing what I know now, I would understand that I could do or be anything I wanted to do or be. It doesn't mean that I would necessarily make different choices, but maybe I would look more closely at that road not taken.

Determination! :) At least for me. Started college at 17 yrs of age and it was 18 years later when I got my Master's Degree. I went to school while pregnant, with kids, around kids, beside kids, etc. You get through one class at a time. If I could do it over I would not have worked so very hard and been so strict with myself. I would have not been so tense and would have taken time to enjoy it. I often dreamed what it must be like to be in a dorm room all by yourself and having time to study. I dreamed about especially when I was single, with my three kids - under 10 yrs of age, working full time and going to school full time. That was crazy and not good for anyone. It cost me my health and it wasn't worth that. I must say, though, that all three of the kids got thru college so I must have made some impression on them. :) Good luck to you!
also - you live and grow through the entire experience, whether you are in a classroom or at a student activity. You are learning all the time.

if i go back to my college times i would attend all lectures and keep asking the doctors questions about every thing
i would surf therough the internet and work hard through the library in order to have full information about all of the courses.
I WOULD NEVER SKIP ANY LECTURE>>>> becaause skipping lectures will make me lose information that can't be written down.
i would study hard for the exams what so ever.
I would sacrifice all my time and liesure time in order to do well in my exams. It's a bit painful but eventually it's gonna be very cool to be the top of the class.

Well I am still attending a university (about halfway through) and have only had to drop one class, but the thing that has got me through so far is not taking too many classes at once and taking those classes that I have more seriously than most.

What got me through school was the thirst for knowledge, working my way through the first few years, and caffiene the last seven...that and student loans, cigarettes, and a whole lot of medication-graduate school was a royal pain!

The fact that I paid my own way through help a lot. Whenever I would be tempted to skip a class or slack in any way, I would remind myself that I paid for it, and I would have to pay for it again if I blew it.

I would study harder, I would join more activities and I would have gotten it over in four years back when it was cheaper to go!
