I know it's common sense to not go out after like 8 clock but that's just impossible !!! I don't have a car and still feel that I need some fresh air sometimes.

new to detroit huh, depends on the area. but it would be wise to have someone or two with you, but too many also would mean looking for trouble. watch how you dress, check your stance. be cool but not a smart ***. dont stare directly into the eyes of a passer byer thats a challange. but have eyes in the back of your head. walk fast, dont stop, get where your going. and dont act scared or intimadated. but be on your guard. never stare at someone on the streets or in a car. never stop to give directions, just say: man you must not be from here and keep going. sometime for them to ask for directons is a distraction and you might get jumped from behind. just keep movin on..... detroit is getting better its movin downriver now....

Detroit is a great city. Now you have ghetto A** people where ever you go, not just in Detroit. to avoid getting in trouble stay with some good people you know in trust. Don't go looking for trouble, because more then likely you'll find some. When I was up there it was like so different from Columbus (where I live) You just have good people and bad people where ever you go. Not just Detroit. And If your that scared carry around a gun, or just don't go outside (Open up the window, if you need fresh air). If your going to live in a high crime rate city, you better gain some Courageous .

It's ok to go out after 8 o'clock. Go with other people, stay in populated, busy, well lit areas. Like someone else said don't look at anyone in the eyes if you're stopped at a light or on the street. Don't stop and talk to strangers. Use your common sense and gut feelings. If you feel unsafe go into a busy public place like a restaurant or bar--there's usually security guards in bars. Be aware of your surroundings. If someone is standing there asking for money no matter how pathetic they look walk past and don't say anything. The main thing is to travel with other people. Oh, and carry pepper spray and have a cell phone on you at all times.

Okay, you want some REAL advice from someone who lives right in downtown Detroit one block from Campus Martius? You'll be fine, go where you want. But, here's some good pointers until you realize downtown Detroit isn't that scary:

NEVER put your head down, always look right at someone coming up near you...if they sense they aren't going to scare you, they'll move on. ALWAYS avoid Capitol Park (Griswold and State), whatever you do. If you go to a casino, you'd better have someone with you, or have the casino make out a check to you for your winnings instead. Stuff the check inside your underwear waistband (I'm not kidding here...).

Move away...FAST...don't look back. There is nothing good happening in that city and people are desperate. As a native Detroiter who moved away, I never realized how bad it was up there. Don't kid yourself and don't listen to these "street-smart tough guys" who are telling you that Detroit is safe. Even the burbs are unsafe. Everyone is down and out and losing their jobs. It's a bad place.

Yea, move. If you can't live in a safe neighborhood get out. I was born in Detroit. One of the best things my folks did was to move to a smaller, safer city. They were both Detroiters before the jobs left.

I have been in downtown Detroit and on 8 Mile Rd around midnight plenty of times and there was no threat. It was really quite peaceful

Are you talking about downtown or the surrounding neighborhoods? Downtown is pretty safe all night. I go out all the time.

If you are in an unsafe neighborhood, put bars on your windows, lock your doors and don't go out after dark.
