Ice it with a cold pack as soon as possible after it happens: cold temperature reduces the amount of inflammatory cytokines released by the damaged cells (inflammation with be hot to the touch- that's from the chemicals released by the cells in an effort to halt damage and repair tissue. Keep the ice on for about 20 minutes then give it 30-60 minutes and do it again. You can use a bag of frozen peas if you don't have a cold pack- just throw them out after it's over because they'll defrost and freeze again.
You can also take an anti-inflammatory over-the-counter drug such as ibuprofen to further reduce the inflammation and it will also relieve the pain as well (bonus!). Ibuprofen and other agents in that category halt the cascade of inflammation by inhibiting the cytokines at a certain point in the cascade. Take with something in your stomach because they can cause gastric upset. Follow the package directions for how much to take and how often (depends on weight and age which you did not give.).
Good luck!

Sorry there is no fast cure. The best treatment is cold compresses. Most of the swelling and discoloration go away within seven to 10 days after injury. The color of the skin around the eye will change over the course of recovery, typically showing green and yellow tones as the blood ages and is cleared from the tissue.
