I drive a mercedes Ml and yes it is a petrol guzzler . But really I cant imagine that bothers anyone but me . I mean no-else pays for my trips to the petrol station . Nor do they pay the extra car tax I have to pay . I am a very capable driver and dont drive like my car is a tank and i dont think I own the road . I have and ML, as I have two kids , a dog and a cleaning co so a large car is a neccessity, Plus they are much more attractive and more fun to drive . So why do people get soo wound up about 4x4 , if you dont like them dont buy one ?

The only reason people like them is so they can run people over without damaging the car!

No-one really gets that worked up. It's all Internet tough guys. I have a slight antipathy of the design cos:

1: Higher-positions headlights = more dazzle for other drivers
2: High door panels restrict view to other drivers. Reversing out of a car park with 2 SUVs side by side is a leap of faith. Same problems with junctions with one parked to the right.
3: Greater inertia caused by higher weight means less safety for other road users in an accident.
4: The BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne are some of the fugliest creations ever put on our streets.

And in answer to the SUV-ers' comeback...
UR JUS JELLUZ - Um... no actually. If I won a Merc status-wagon in a lottery I'd sell it straight away and get a quality sports car and spend the rest of the money that wouldn't depreciate like a stone.
I CAN DO WHAT I LIEK - Indeed. By that same token other people can express their opinions too.

They cant afford one thats why.

Your ML will take up no more space on the road than a mondeo estate, should the mondeo be taken off the road unless filled with 5 passangers and a boot of gear?

My pet hate isnt 4x4's but people using cars to go a couple of hundred yards to the shops or to the local school to drop their obese children off.

I see your point, even though I don't necessarily approve of you driving a car that uses the most amount of petrol, unless you live in the country and need one to get around.

What makes me laugh is imagining all the women asking their husbands to buy them a 4x4 to protect their children when they drive them to school. And you know that all the men will buy one just to keep the women quiet. Show me a woman in a 4x4, and I'll show you a hen-pecked husband!!

HOWEVER, if the women knew how to drive in the first place, they wouldn't need the extra protection anyway - they only have accidents 'cos their cars are so large. In addition, the extra pollution their car produces is only causing more damage to the planet that their children will need to live in, so where is the logic. And finally, they should be walking their offspring to school instead of developing a generation of couch potatoes, but they can't walk them to school 'cos then they'll breathe in all the exhaust fumes from the other 4x4's and become asthmatic!!!!

Anyway, as a personal protest, when I'm driving I NEVER let one pull out in front of me.

I realise my views may be unpopular, but remember them in 20 years time when the world has gone pear-shaped (in more ways than one).

Alot of people go on about global warming and its down to 4x4s, but realisticly its the amount of aeroplanes in the air with all these 'no frill' airlines and people going on a plane to short destinations, when taking the 4x4 there would probably be more comfortable and alot less damaging to the environment. So next time someone has a go, ask them where they went on holiday recently.

I agree. I don't understand the logic of these people getting upset either. We live in the City of Phoenix right now. But have plans to move back to mountain country. When we do, we plan to buy another 4X4. The 4X4 can't be beat for mountain driving and it is great for winter. The extra cost is well worth it. Especially when you have rugged roads to cross.

In answer to your question. I personally think a lot of these people who complain the loudest, would prefer to have a larger vehicle and are put out that they can't afford it right now with the gas prices sky rocketing. Still their logic makes to sense.

Bravo! There really is too much of this ridiculous talk of global warming and road congestion. I'm pulling your leg, I really don't like 4X4 school run tractors. I always mutter "get a car", or "get a bike", when I see them.

I feel the same way you do. I bought the car and I will feed it. If someone dosent like it then TOO BAD for them. They can look the other way, until they pay for my insurance and fuel, they cant say one word to me about what I dirve!!!

it isn't so much people like you that they mind. its people that have no need for one (you clearly do). I personally like 4x4 (volvo xc90 is fab) and have no problem with their gas guzzerling ways, but ppl that care about the environment like to moan about them. my ownly problem is if i am hit by one my lil coupe is likely to be squished along with me and i will die, but i am doing my best to avoid this.
