I don't live there so I really don't have a dog in this race. But I have been there several times and I think this NIBYism of many Manhattan elites is just silly. Wal-Mart is shown to be good for the local economy. Make Wal-Mart pay the high property taxes for all that retail space. Think of all the city and state taxes that will be collected. The property and sales taxes are dauntingly huge! Plus, you could put it up in Harlem or north of 120th where you have a better market for downscale goods (the fancy-pants in Wash Park or the East side would never be seen inside a Wal Mart).

It just sound right for a free market and consumer choice. I say let the market, not the wealthy elites, decide if Manhattan should have a Wal Mart.
