This is great advice actually. No, I don't work for Dell and they haven't paid me to promote their products. I have purchased the Dell Inspiron Notebooks for myself and as a gift for others and have ben extremely satisfied thus far. Check out the entire line at :

There are several models to choose from, the 1501 being the basic home use model. The 1501 starts at about $700 and has a lot to offer for the price. You can get freee shipping by ordering direct from Dell also. In addition, you can customize your laptop by upgrading certain components for additional fees. You put together your laptop "cafeteria style" selecting exactly which components you want installed and they add up your package price. The result is a laptop that was created uniquely for you. Customer service is excellent and shipping has always been prompt from Dell. I would highly suggest purchasing from them if you are seriously in the market to buy. Side note: If you are a student, then Dell offers student purchase programs that offer substantial discounts to buyers. They also sell other equipment such as Canon cameras and printers. If you need financing on your purchase, they offer 6 months no interest financing on approved credit. A great deal all the way around. Good luck with your purchase!

I just completed my Dell order and ended up with a Dell1505. I did this after looking at this article and reading consumer reports, cnet, pcworld, etc.

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3359&review=Dell+Inspiron+1501

After talking to two Dell reps, I was torn between the 1501 and 1505 (they are pushing 1501 it seems), but in the end I chose 1505 since when they added all the features I wanted to the 1501, it was priced similarly to the 1505. I think the 1501 has the processor that was highly rated by cnet. And the base price of 1501 was excellent; however, I kept adding more and more features and ended up with prices similar to a 1505.

It really depends what you will be using the computer for and how it will be used. I am not a gamer, but I multitask so I wanted a computer to be able to handle the type of programs.

Dont know about the 1501 specifically, but in that price range here are two other DELL Inspirons with some sick discounts.

Inspiron 1405/640M, Evalue code 09356-BNPH4J, Intel Core Duo 14th inch screen, 1GB Memory, 80 GB hard drive, DVDRW double layer, $649

Inspiron 1505/6400, Evalue code 09356-BNPHE4J, Intel Core Duo, 15.4 inch screen, 1 GB Ram, 160GB HD, etc $749

These are through the 10th of January I believe. These two are at least $150 cheaper than any self-configured version.

Hope that helps. After some pricing and research, I think I'm going with the Dell over the HP Pavilion 2000. At least 200 cheaper for the same specs.

Just got one for my wife for school, and she LOVES it. Apparently it does everything she needs for college.
