Do you believe caning will reduce crime in the U.S. or at least deter it? This is used in Singapore with amazing results. If caning will not reduce crime, then what would?

No. Punishment doesn't prevent crime except by putting the criminal behind bars with they can't re-offend. Criminals always think they can get away with it. The states without a death penalty have a lower murder rate than the states with a death penalty. Many crimes can be prevented by paying workers a wage they can support their family on. Many other crimes can be prevented by better education, tougher academic requirements and mandatory treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Caning makes society feel better but criminals are not thoughful enough to think they will get caught.

How about putting people in the stocks and chucking rotting fruit and veg at them? Wouldn't that be more fun? A great day out for the kids.

I think canning and flogging should be reserved for sailors. Hey, why don't you get some taliban where you live, they follow islamic law and will cut the hands off of theives right up your street eh?
