"Bi" means two and "polar" means sides. Bipolar is when you have two sides. It's also called manic depression. Manic means you are hyper. When you are in this state you are hyper. You can stay up until morning with no sleep and be energetic and alert. I liked this part of my illness because I got a lot accomplished. You tend to talk very fast and your thoughts race, also called running thoughts. This is also the most dangerous cycle because in the depressed state you may have thoughts of suicide but you probably won't have the energy to do it. In the depressed state, you lack energy, you loss interest in things that used to interest you, you don't bath (hygiene is generally neglected), you withdraw and you lose your appetite. Get help. I got Depakote although they wanted to put me on lithium but I considered that more dangerous than the former. Now after several years I am off of drugs. Read self help books and eat better--little or no meat, veggies and fruit and water. Take natural vitamins.
