Popup blockers will only stop web based popups. They can help somewhat but will do nothing to stop popups on a computer that is infected with trojan downloaders that are contacting other computers to download and deliver the pop up ads.

Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine, if you are getting excessive popups, or are getting popups even when you are offline.

This is the one I use (it will take some time).

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender

2. Scan for trojans and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido

If you are using an older version of Windows (pre XP-SP2) you may also be getting "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Messenger Service enabled by default. These type of popups will have the words "Messenger Service" up top in the title bar. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.

Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:

Good luck.

If you're on IE7, click on the Tools button at the top right of the screen, with the little cog wheel, and go to Pop Up Blocker options. Bear in mind that if you turn off all pop ups there will be a few sites you won't be able to use (some banking sites for instance).

Get shot of Internet Explorer, say hello to MOZILLA FIREFOX which automatically blocks pop-ups from all sites unless you tell it to do otherwise on a site-by-site basis as you visit them.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
All your saved bookmarks can be exported directly from IE into Firefox.

There's also software for blocking Pop-ups, including one built into ZONEALARM INTERNET SECURITY SUITE from http://www.zonelabs.com

Newer versions of Internet Explorer also have built-in pop-up blockers, but I discovered that one caused problems on my PC barely a day after I'd installed an operating system on it for the first time and got everything running (it got a bit over zealous, wouldn't let me use my webmail, or download anything, so I had to switch to installing a copy of FIREFOX I'd downloaded onto my USB flashdrive earlier in the week to get my crappy old laptop to work online until my new PC was completed being built after my old desktop PC had self-destructed)

Get a pop up blocker. Spysweeper works pretty good... but research some others. There are a million out there.

Get a popup blocker. The Yahoo and Google Toolbars have popup blockers on them. There are also programs that you can download that prevent popups from coming up.
