That's a very excellent question. I have a perfect example of why they play music during movies. Now when you say music, you are talking about actual songs by artists, AND soundtrack bits played by an orchestra. In The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (3rd part of the trilogy), there is a point during the movie, right before the huge battle scene at which all the noise is cut out and everything happens in slow motion. The emotional feeling you get at that point of the movie makes you want to cry. Everyone in the room was crying, and it makes you feel terrible. Immediately after about 30 seconds of literally COMPLETE silence, the music cuts in and the battle begins. Music makes us feel complete. It helps us feel what the characters are feeling. Without the music, you feel lost, scared, and upset.

Well selected and well timed music during a movie adds suspense and gives the viewer a more involved feeling. It also allows music companies to pay big bucks to have their songs in movies. It is the best advertisment you could possibly ask for. Two hours of someone sitting and listening to the songs selected will generate a boat load of sales for the record company. There are probably many more reasons, but I feel these ar the two most important. Hope this helps. -Kris B.

Because it helps to stir up our emotions and we enjoy emotions. Movie is story; it is a manipulation of our feelings, and plays upon our desires, hopes, fears, and so on. That is what story is all about, at least when it comes to touching and moving its audience.
