When you add up the direct and indirect taxes we pay just to get by each month, its around 43% of earnings.

In my opinion, I think the reason we pay far higher prices for cars, petrol, tobacco, alcohol, clothes, food etc is simply because 'we do'.

We are a nation of moaners, not a nation of activists. However, if you did manage to get 60million people here all signoing a petition, and taxes were halved, you have to then find that missing money from somewhere else.

According to what they said on Radio 4 today that if they were to reintroduce the old style rates instead instead of council tax the average house in Totteridge (north London) would pay between £3000 and £8000 in rates whereas now ( the houses are in bandH) they pay a meagre £2000.

Last i read some of our taxes went on getting a doctor flown in from Italy i think it was, to cover a weekend shift in a Highland hamlet. Can't remember the exact cost but it was £1000's. And still Gp's complain they don't get paid enough.

The age old debate about taxes! OK - we live in a civillised society and we pay our bit to keep essential services running. So far, so good. But there are cases of "a tax too far" - inheritance tax is one obvious example. Moreover, being taxed would be far less painfull if we actually saw it being spent wisely and not squandered. I have some dealings with local government and have come across cases where a department has underspent on their budget. They have to spend the rest of the money before the end of the year otherwise they get capped. In other words, punished for saving money! And then there are cases of officials being overpaid for doing sod all. Millions being wasted on dodgy road schemes that bring chaos and misery to people everyday. And on a grander scale: how come there's never enough money for schools and hospitals (without raising taxes NI) but we can afford to spend millions every day on a pointless unwanted war in Iraq?

A lot of it goes into things I agree with - healthcare, road maintenance (you can say what you like - it happens), policing, education.

There are some things I'd like to see huge cutbacks on - especially perks for MPs (travel & accomodation for starters, let alone cabinet wages) and social security.

But at the end of the day there's never enough money to go around so would society really be better off with lower taxes? You get what you pay for.

Sorry but just look at the petrol protesters! point made. We in Britain are to weak for that. Look at the French they can bring the ports to a stand still about someone getting the sack need I say more?

What do you mean become a gypsy Ebeneezer? My local Gypsies work damned hard! You really want to become a right wing bigot MissTee and hide all your money overseas so that you don't pay any taxes at all. Then you can go round blaming everyone else for the lack of sex in your life.

Go for it. I think you are absolutly correct and it makes me seethe. This government has bought in so many 'stealth' taxes - just little things that do not affect the vast majority of people. They do this so that is dilutes our anger, yet there are getting to be so many that we must act soon.

UP THE REVOLUTION. No wonder the black economy is thriving and there is so much crime. People can't afford the basics of life!

Gosh, I moved away from London 4 years ago and everyday I read the news at home and I'm astonished at the amount of taxes they're putting on everything.

When I was in london, the travel rates on bus where £1 in zone 1 and 70p in all other zones....now theres the oyster card, congestion charge went from £5 to now £8...this is labour government alright, they want you to "work" your "ar*e" off.

Blairs Labour? No thanks...

We do protest but they do not listen. We just used to getting ripped off don't know any better.
I hate taxes because we pay more yet services are shrinking so where are these billions going?

Western countries are so civilized that protesting and complaning or voting means very little. Now they want to export this to the middle east, no wonder those people are fighting 'cos they don't want to end up like us.
