I just returned from Berlin: was there over the Christmas holiday.
I stayed at the Berlin Palace hotel, on Budapest Strausse, jsut across from the ZooStation (pretty much the heart of the subway). The world class Berlin zoo is also right there (hence the name of the train station) and they have a really cool Panda Bear exibit. I highly recommend the hotel........

As far as sights go, you have the Kaisers Residence, Church, Museum (the museums are incredible), the history of Nazi Germany, the new Jewish memorial, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenberg Gate, the list goes on and on.

One thing I MUST recommend is the Curraywurst. Its German sausage seasoned with curray.......you must try it!

Best place to stay? - depends on your budget. The most expensive is probably the Hotel Adlon at over 5000€ per night. I've heard good reports of BAXPAX a hostel. Here is a link http://www.baxpax.de/en/home/

Most of the sights are concentrated in a district called Mitte. You can do walking tours. There are many sights in other parts of Berlin too, for example the 1936 Olympic stadium where the World Cup final was held last year, or how about the Glienicke Bridge where the U2 pilot Gary Powers was exchanged. Of course you cannot miss Frederick the Great's palace of Sanssouci, Potsdam.
