You can do two things about this issue:

(1) visit http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and it will automatically detect your server's correct IP address.

(2) Call your ADSL router manufacturer's customer service number and they will help you install your ADSL router and help you find your server's IP address.

Thanks.
Have a nice day and hope you install and start enjoying the freedom with ADSL router.

Best manufacturers for ADSL Routers are:

1. BT
2. Netgear
3. Belkin.

I really hope that your manufacturer is one from the list above.

The CMD prompt and typing of ipconfig will only show your computers ip address not the Servers address It will however show the default gateway. .If you want the server address with your internet ip number just click this link .

look for server settings in your browser.
if you saved the paper copy when you signed up for your ISP it will be listed there as well.

I assume that you are setting up a hardware firewall, so your desktop machine is no longer the one connected directly to the internet, at which point your firewall becomes the server your desktop connects to. You are no longer connecting directly, so your server settings will be switched to the router/firewall, and will be defined as proxy settings. Windows and Linux and MacOs have a wizard each with it's respective browser that will walk you through it. It will be a lot like when you connected to the internet to begin with.

Go to the command prompt. on XP/2000 go to start -> run and type cmd. on windows 9x/Me type command. When the command prompt opens, type ipconfig. you will get the default gateway which is the IP address of the ISP.
