Heartache:
A transmission rebuild with 12/12 warranty for $2K is a fair deal.

As Doc says, get a more extended warranty if possible. However this can be difficult because the shop may not be set up for it with their own suppliers.

For example, the shop probably receives a 12 month warranty from their own suppliers. If they extend your warranty beyond that they have greater financial exposure.

Many jobbers (suppliers of parts to shops) will warranty parts and labor to shops that spend above a certain threshold. (I do not know how common this is through-out the US of A, but I negotiated such arrangements with multiplier jobbers in N. California) But I digress...

A 99 Alero with a 3.8L is a sweet car. If in overall good condition, go for the tranny and drive it another 100K.

It sounds about right to me,my buddy just had a automatic transmission replaced and it cost him 3000 dollars.I also work for a parts delivery warehouse we have replaced three transmissions in our trucks. With a used transmission from a junkyard and labor it was still 2300 dollars to replace them.

Buy a extra warranty. I paid that and got 24 months 24,000 miles. Of course it blew up at 15,000 mile. Dodge transmission.
