My boyfriends freezer has one. Mine doesn't. I guess it depends on what brand you get. I just bought a new refrigerator/freezer in April and it didn't have one. I just asked for one with an automatic ice maker. I didn't even know they came with them until a couple of weeks ago.

I would say that people need a light bulb in their fridge, because there are many who get up at night to have a snack or glass of milk, and if they don't turn on the main light (i never do it, because it irritates me when I'm still half asleep), they wouldn't be able to see the things in the fridge without a bulb. But a freezer doesn't really need a bulb, because I don't know anyone who is eating something out of the freezer as a snack at three o'clock, you only open it when you are cooking or when you came home with a bag full of groceries, and then you have light in the kitchen.
Maybe it is a silly idea, but it sounds plausible to me.

All side by side and bottom freezers have lights. Some top mount freezers have lights but the majority do not. You can usually see in a top mount freezer without a light much easier than in the fresh food section of the same refrigerator mainly because the lighting in the room comes from the ceiling down. You are blocking much of the rooms light in the fresh food section with the bulk of your body and the door. The light comes from over your shoulders in the top mount freezer section so it affords more light in the freezer.

Simply, the manufacturer is been cheap! They figure people don't go to the freezer a lot, so they don't bother to put one in there.

By the way, I have an AMANA fridge with bottom freezer, and it does include a light. It depends how high-end you go. My costed me about $900.00.

Some freezers do have bulbs. I would think that smaller ones don't since you pack a freezer tighter than a refrigerator and could easily break the bulb.

Maybe because you have a 1950 refrigerator and freezer. Almost all of the modern freezers have lights in them.
