They buy the pennant every year.

The certainly have the most spoilt fans.

They try to buy the pennant every year because the current rules allow them to have the money to do so. (BTW, the pennant means winning your league championship series and going to the WS, not winning your division.)

Now, with REAL revenue sharing, this could well be very, very different.

This is my personal opinion, set in writing 5 1/2 years ago, but something that had been in my head for a few years before that:

It makes no sense, to me, to advocate a salary cap of any type without also advocating true revenue sharing. And, given the long history of labor strife in baseball, let’s go with the idea that the owners must first prove that they can adopt and live with a true revenue sharing package before asking the players to accept a salary cap.

My idea for true revenue sharing goes like this:

1.For each team, add the local broadcasting contract revenue to the advertising revenue.
2.For teams based outside of the US, convert these totals to US dollars using the exchange rate at noon, Eastern, on the first business day of March of each year. (For those individuals who want and understand more detail here, use the inter-bank mid-rate at that date and time.)
3.Rank these totals 1 - 30 in decreasing value.
4.The top 10 teams must put 25% of this total into a common, revenue-sharing pot.
5.Of the owners share of the All-Star game proceeds, 50% goes into this pot. (Don’t worry, 25% of the players share must go to BAT, and 25% to a minor league pension fund.)
6.Post-season proceeds are to be divided in the same manner as All-Star game proceeds.
7.This pot is then evenly divided among the 10 teams at the bottom of the list in point 2.

This proposal does not limit the amount of local broadcast contract, but it would make a team think again about asking for, say an $80M contract when it would only see $60M of it. This would put a drag on local broadcast contracts, something that broadcasters would greatly appreciate.

As some teams have major-league payrolls that are almost entirely funded by their local broadcast contract (the Yankees, for one), this would also tend to put a drag on salaries. In fact, if this works well enough, there may, repeat, may not be a need for a salary cap.

This proposal also means that small-revenue teams are getting a realistic revenue boost from this fund, as opposed to the drop-in-a-bucket amounts that they get from the luxury tax that the current commissioner (pardon me while I gag on the concept of any owner, let alone that one, as commissioner) thinks of as revenue sharing.

NO WAY DUDE! The Yankees are not spoiled, if they were, they would win EVERY series. They are a legend and I do not understand why people hate them. They earn a lot of money and they spend it on the team. What? Do you think they should spend it on other teams? And I mean come on, if any other team would earn the money the Yankees earn, do you think they wouldn't get players they know can get them a ring??? Come on!!!

*YANKEE FAN NO MATTER WHAT, WIN OR LOSE!

2007 HERE WE COME!

GO YANKS*

Oh boy another genius complaining about the Yankees payroll, blah, blah, blah.

OK professor. First of all, they haven't won a pennant in three years, so that means they do not "buy the pennant every year" like you put so intelligently.

Second, they can spend all the money they want, it's theirs. What would you do with it? They rightfully put it back into their team, as teams should. They make lots of money by drawing 4 millions people every year, selling merchandise, and by having a hugely successful cable network (YES Network). That money goes back into the team and yes, they do have a high payroll, which they have every right to have. Maybe they should just give money away to other teams? Or feel sorry for them? Would you give your money to other people that you worked hard for? Another crybaby.

Third, they paid $26 MILLION in luxury tax alone this year, which goes to small market teams. This means the Yankees put money BACK into the game.

Fourth, they will also pay tens of millions in revenue sharing, which again goes to small market teams who are supposed to use the money to put back into the team.

Fifth, what do you mean by "spoiled team"? That makes no sense. What is a spoiled team? You need to start making some sense and ask your question intelligently before you blurt out such nonsense.

Oh, it also appears that you are a Red Sox fan, and your team will have to get along with a payroll of only around $140 MILLION this year. Boston fans are such hypocrites. They try to make it look like they are a team who is trying to make it on a low payroll, like Florida or Minnesota. They should thank the Yankees for having a higher payroll, it hides the fact that Boston's is second ( and not as far behind the Yankees' as it used to be)
I owned you man!! OWNED YOU!!! YANKEES ROCK!!!

They used to be. Now its the SF Giants. Any team with Mr. Ego Barry Bonds and tries to buy a pennant with overrated pitchers is the new #1.

I know right? I mean, with the amount of their payroll it seems that they always try to "buy" the title. But they just happen to be stupid enough so they haven't won any pennant after the 2003 season :p

Uhhhh...they buy the pennant? Doesn't every player get paid? That is the stupidest thing that Yankee haters say. Isn't that what the game is - building the best team you can??

Plus the Red Sux have paid out the butt this off season for
half a $ $ players. Example: JD Drew. I know they haven't finalized the deal yet, but they offered him 70 million when they knew from the beginning that he is very injury prone....very stupid.

The Yankees Win
THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well let's see 26 World Series titles, sell out almost every home and away game they play and a Owner who really really cares about winning. Isn't that every teams ultimate goal? Come on spoiled let's get real. They go and do what mostly every other Owner can do but choice not to. They put the fans in the seats and the 26 rings on the fingers. GO YANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hope your not a Red Sox fan cause if you haven't noticed they have paid more then the Yankees have this year. And they haven't won the pennant since 03 so if they can't win it how can they buy it?
