Verbatim is probably one of the two to three best brands out there, in fact in my experience it is the best out. Imation was a very good brand back in the CD-R days, but now it is very low quality. Verbatim is fairly inexpensive, but don't let that fool you, it is a high quality brand.

I have never had a problem with Verbatim or Sony discs. It has been years since I used Imation, but don't remember having a problem during that time. Had horrible results with Memorex. Personally, don't consider Verbatim a discount DVD brand. Everything I read about disc brands instructs me to stay away from "value discs." Very disconcerting to have a bad disc when none of them are really cheap. I will say something about Verbatim: They are the only company that answered an email I sent when I was researching Dual-Layer discs and burners. I, therefore, have a great fondness for that company.

I bought two 50packs of Verbatim DVD-R certified 16x. Out of the entire first cake box, maybe 5 burned at 16x without a coaster. The only way I could be assured of not getting a coaster was to burn at 4x and no faster. I also have some Verbatim DVD-RW which burn fine at 2x which is what they are rated at.
I will be looking at another brand next time. My burner is an Asus DRW-1608P2S rated for 16x. I got the same results even after updating the firmware. I got the same results irregardless of which program I use to burn with.
Just my experience. I haven't tried Imation DVD-/+R although I have some of the -RW which work well.
