I LOVE THEM!!!!!!
Green Day was originally part of the punk rock scene at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. Their early releases for independent label Lookout! Records earned them a grassroots fanbase, some of whom felt alienated when the band signed to a major label. Nevertheless, their major label debut Dookie became a breakout success in 1994 and eventually sold 20 million copies worldwide. As a result, Green Day was widely credited, along with fellow California punk bands The Offspring and Rancid, with reviving mainstream interest in and popularizing punk rock in the United States.[1][2] Green Day's immediate follow-up albums didn't achieve the massive success of Dookie, but they were still successful. Their 2004 "punk rock opera" American Idiot reignited the band's popularity, selling 15 million copies worldwide.[3]

The band is okay. I like some of their songs.

I see their social / political / environmental concerns and causes as being theirs and not mine. I don't let musicians and actors tell me what to care about. I don't think that celebrities are any smarter than anyone else, so I don't champion a cause because I like someone's singing or acting.

Example:
I love Brad Pitt's acting and Angelina Jolie's acting. However, I don't care at all about the people starving elsewhere in the world, since I'm having a hard enough time feeding myself. If I had the millions of dollars that they had, then I would pursue my own charitable endeavors.

They're okay.

As far as what they stand for, I personally don't like political messages in my music, and it does get annoying that their biggest songs have political messages that I don't agree with. But overall, I just don't think they're that good of a band, that's ultimately why I don't listen to them much.

Commercial sellout of the punk sound, a bunch of oldtimers selling out to ensure a rich retirement. They don't stand for anything, a total fake.

They are punk orginially and now they have catchy tunes that question the government like punk first did in the late 70's. Nothing new just reworked.
