Nearly everytime I visit here, something derogitry is being said. My experience of Americans has always been good, and I did work in Houston for several years so I met a few. What did they do wrong ( Please dont mention president or war )

4 thumbs down to this - Why is it not a good question? It is getting plenty of response, and generally intelligent answers so it is not hard to work out why and who doesn't like it, which explains alot!

All generalisations are bad

I think alot of people have a problem with the American government rather than the actual people of America. It is what America does as a country. There will obviously be alot of good American people just like there can be alot of good English people, but we all know its the bad people that get the attention.

But you have to admit sometimes the accent can be a bit much and don't forget the many Americanised exports and cr*ppy films about high schools that don't do any favours. People are probably sick of American culture, which is overwhelming sometimes, because it is everywhere, people resent it, I know I don't like the Americanisation of everything, but obviously I don't mind American people, if anything you get my respect for being more conservative than Britain and knowing how to keep your teeth in great condition!! Hey I should be an American , I am that, but I like England far too much.

Imagine what abuse Muslims get for the actions of some. People will never learn that people are bad, no particular groups are bad.

I have noticed this to, one answer for this question says, that we don't care about other countries and are to lazy to learn new things, and they said we believe in generalizing, but isn't say that none of us care stereotyping? A lot of the older people don't know about geography and history of some other countries is because then they didn't have classes about them but now we do. In New York state you have to pass 2 or 3 years of Global History, and one year of American History. I have tests of just labeling. Like say Africa and Asia. Without a word bank labeling countries, lakes, Mountains, rivers, and deserts. I mean you don't have to label every single thing, but on a Africa and Asia test, I have to label about 70 things, so please don't tell me I don't know geography. I say the only way you can judge a whole country fairly is to meet every person and really get to know them, so if someone has met and gotten to know all 300 million Americans they can judge us fairly. I hate racism, I am nice, I can be shy, I don't like the Iraq war, I don't like seeing and hearing about people dieing and terrible thing's that happen in the world, I have gone to Europe, and I want to be a doctor that goes to third world countries, and know finally people won't be able to say that Americans don't travel because a lot of us don't have passports. A lot of us go to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean island's, and we never needed passport's to go there before and now we do. It's a lot easier to go to countries around you then travel really far. People in Europe travel more to other countries because they have more countries around them, a different country in Europe is like a different state here, and everyone I know has been to at least 3 or 4 different states, and been to Canada but that's because we live by the border, and I know bunch of people that go to Mexico and the Caribbeans.

To a limited extent you cannot blame the crimes of a government on its citizens, but there is a limit, at a certain point not deposing a government involved criminal activities around the planet becomes complacency and acceptance of their activities and blame for those activities must fall upon the citizens themselves... or maybe its just the stupid rednecks and christian fundies that seem to have the loudest voices being heard worldwide and swaying public opinion against the whole country.....want the world to love you? get rid of the rednecks and Christians, and quit trying to take over the world...

I have some lovely American friends. Where ever you are in the world there's good & bad people, you can't tar all Americans with the same brush, or any country!
As for not mentioning the war - why, it's something that's effecting every single one of us, we can't just brush it under the carpet & hope everyone forgets.
What about the set of muppets who are running our country?

i wouldn't say it was the person themselves its there education or should i say lack of it!no disrespect the average Americans master the three R's and sciences etc its got to do with there understanding of other cultures they have been so wrapped up in there own history for the past three hundred or so years they have forgotten thousands of years from which they came.iv met great people from the us,some hard to relate but got there, they need more education in world modern studies.there attitude to foreign policy has got to be changed in there politics and introduced into there education system.it would make them look less ignorant!

Well for me as a brit it's Mc Donalds, all the crap tv programs they make and we get on our telly, their perfect teeth and false character, their constant need to be the world police force, their stinking attitude towards global warming, their presidents seem like the kid at school that got put in the slow learners class, and they just assume they are soooooo cool...
But appart from that they are ok

I've worked with hundreds of Americans and I like most of them, it's more the attitude of the country as a whole rather than individuals. I also believe that the US could benefit from a more comprehensive World georgraphy/awareness class at school.

Personally I've not got a problem with Americans, the few that I have met have been very nice people.

they think they are being controversial. These type of people make too many generalisations about Americans.

Here are some;
They are all fundamentalist Christians. (even though you have more mosques than Church's throughout the whole of the Arab world)

Your army are christian crusaders (even though it also attacks "christian countries and has sanctions on them")

Your all fat (even though you have some of the best sports people in the world)

Your all racists (even though your country has more immigrants than others)

You all think your better than everyone else. (even though we know for attacking foreigners over a game of football)

Your accent is annoying. (this part is true)
