Thunderbirds are the locomotives that provide emergency rescue to stranded trains on the British railway network. Accordingly, the locomotives are named after characters from the TV series "Thunderbirds". The rescue locomotives are owned by Branson's Virgin Rail.

Virgin Trains do have a number of diesel locomotives positioned around the system to rescue broken down trains. They are commonly known as 'Thunderbirds' and each carries the name of one of the characters from the children's programme!
