Try Ikea for some inexpensive and modular kind of ideas. Also, check places like the "dent & scratch" area of some of the nicer stores. I got some lovely pieces like this for practically nothing and either touched things up myself or, as was usually the case, the damage couldn't even be seen (it was on the back, the foot of a sofa, etc.) If I think of any other places, I'll edit them in.

I just bought a nice sofa from FURNITURE BASICS today. I've been shopping around Dallas for months, and this place has stuff like you'd find at Ashley, and Roomstore, but they cost much less. (a lot of the so-called "warehouse places" cost even more, I found) Plus, they offer same day delivery instead of waiting 4-6 weeks like Ashley told me. It's probably about a 20-25 min. drive to Lewisville if you go after the traffic dies down some. (6:30-7:00) Get on George Bush Tollway West and go to I-35 North. The people were real laid back and nice too. If you go on Wed. or Sun. the actual owner is there, and she can even lower the prices if she wants to. It's worth the drive.

Ikea in Frisco. It's very inexpensive but you have to assemble most of the furniture on your own.
Or, Rooms to Go and The Roomstore are also all the North Texas metroplex. They are inexpensive.
Freed's fruniture in N. Dallas isn't necessarily "cheap", but several times a year they do a huge outdoor tent sale & you can get some good deals during those times.

Depending upon what you want, there is a designer place called Nadeau that is open once a month to the public. They have very inexpensive and interesting import furniture from Indonesia that is quite well priced. I would suggest that you call them and get on their mailing list. They will send you a postcard for the "open Saturday" events. They are down in the design district area.

Whichever city or state I visit, I always check Motel6 or Super8 online and decide which of the two is offering the best rate for a place to stay that is reasonably close to my destination.

Try Craig's list (http://craigslist.org). People sell or give away all kinds of perfectly good furniture rather than move it.
