Congratulations! Where in Hawaii are you moving to? Honolulu is the busiest city in the whole State - most tall buildings, most hotels, most shopping malls, most happening nightlife, and most tourists. However, if you're moving from a metropolitan hub, then this will be a drastic difference. It took me some time to get used to the lifestyle and rhythm here; most everything is slower. The buildings looked super old, like back in the 80s. The Bus comes every 20 minutes.

But now I appreciate that's the charm; the slow pace and the vacation-y atmosphere. People here are mostly friendly and there's a wide variety of ethnic (and authentic to a certain degree) foods- Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Mexican and of course Hawaiian. Not to mention the natural attractions, beaches and mountains, and LOST!

You can spend weekends here without spending much $$ if you're into the outdoors, just go to the beach! You'd probably face some difficulty understanding some local folks because they speak with heavy native accents, and/or Pidgin. And local words are sprinkled about generously in conversations. I'd suggest you look up Hawaiian words before you come here.

If you're moving because you're looking for a more relaxed and quiet lifestyle, you'd love it here. Good luck! Hope this helps!

So you know that Hawaii is expensive. That's a plus. Ninety percent of EVERYTHING is shipped in this is the main reason it cost more. And Hawaii is an excellent place to study Marine Biology. For all the reason you stated. We have an excellent bus system on Oahu. If you are willing to take the time then it will cut down on gas costs. You can have car but you might want to take the bus most of the time and use a car only when really needed. Hawaii is one of most culturally diverse place in America. We have several cultures here. Hawaiians being the most obvious. Due to Hawaii's history there is some racism against Whites. Some can't take this. May this is why you thought we would get "our panties in a bunch". Not everybody you live in Hawaii is Hawaiian. To be Hawaiian to must have Hawaiian blood. Or Hawaiian ancestry. If you are like me and have lived in Hawaii all their life but have no Hawaiian blood you are considered a Local. We also have a diverse Asian population; Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese (sp?). All these culture differ. And it is best if you learn the differences. We also have a dialect of Pidgin Creole English. Or it is called Pidgin for short. This language was created during the plantation days. We had workers from all over Asia and the Pacific they all spoke different languages and the needed a way to communicate. So a new lang grew and was created. There a some who hear Pidgin an the equate it with lack of intelligence. Do not do this. Then there is what can be called "Rock Fever" some people tend to feel trapped because they can't drive anywhere else but Hawaii. There is no way you can drive into another state. If you need to fly home to the Mainland then 1) take more time because you have to fly over an ocean first. 2) Will cost more because you have to fly over an ocean first. So I went beyond the expensive I hope this satisfies you knoweldge.

It rains a lot (at least in my experience), the cost of living is really high, but it's so nice there, i think it's a great place to live.

I heard it was not as great as it sounds. That (Honna-loulou) it is just full of crime and drugs, but the beaches sound nice!
