Solving a complex mathematical equation could certainly give a little polish to your ego.
I think of that kind of thing as sort of intellectual masturbation.

I love love love math. I am an application developer. I love trying to figure out cycles and series etc. It is very satisfying. I can sit in front of my computer figuring stuff out for days or weeks on end and I never get tired of it.
