There is some indication that civilization is much older than what scholars currently accept. the Sphynx, for example, is believed to have been built much earllier than what is currently accepted. there are tidbits of information about Atlantis that come from very many sources, but they are all just tantalizing clues. As with any myth that has lasted through the ages, chances are excellent that it began from fact. The Amazons, Hercules, King Arthur, Moses' parting of the water, all these stories have actual history behind them. Just like a previous answer indicated, Troy was once considered a myth until the city was actually discovered by a German businessman who dabbled in archeology.
So Atlantis is most likely something that had existed.

He doesn't say it's fictional. He claims that Solon got the story from Egyptian priests two generations before him. Others in the group claim to remember the story, as well. It's just enough of a tease to keep people looking.
The story appears in two dialogs, Timeas and Critias. They're a pretty quick read, but interesting.
