I'm trying to establish an ad-hoc, internet sharing connection between two laptops. It's not working. I've created an ad-hoc connection on the host computer. The problem is, I can't get the client computer to recognize it or even find it. What am I doing wrong? (by the way, I'm trying to do this without a router)

By the way, I'd prefer it to be wireless.

OK, to start we know you are trying to do this with out a router, that is the definition of an ad-hoc, A wireless connection between two computers with out any switching ability.

This is what you need to do.

1) install your wireless adapter in computer number one
2) make the ip address something like 192.168.0.100
3) make the subnet something like 255.255.255.100
4) make the connection an Ad-Hoc connection, not an infrastructure connection.
5) Name your SSID
6) Name your workgroup what ever you want
7) install your wireless adapter in computer number one
8) make the ip address something like 192.168.0.101
9) make the subnet something like 255.255.255.100
10) make the connection an Ad-Hoc connection, not an infrastructure connection.
11) Name your workgroup what ever you want
12) When viewing available netwroks make sure it is set to view ad-hoc networks
13) connect to your SSID
14) make sure your firewalls are set for file and printer sharing

I'm going to assume your Internet connection is a high speed cable...
For Connection Sharing (no router), you need at least one of the machine to have TWO network ports. A Firewire port will do in a pinch.

Your main PC ("Supehero") has the Internet connection. The second port of Superhero connects to the second PC ("Sidekick"). Any time Sidekick hooks to the Internet, it does so via Superhero: connection sharing.

Now that the PHYSICAL connection is sorted, what are the computer settings? First, save you current settings- write them down in case things go wrong. Then take a deep breath, and- run the Micro$oft Internet Connection Wizard. On both machines.

A broadband connection can be shared between 2 or more computers using a router . Though wireless connections are becoming popular, a wired connection is usually more secure and faster. The router used for a wired connection is also cheaper. More details at http://fixit.in/shareinternet.html
