Yes, it was Piper At the Gate of Dawn - Syd Barret's masterpiece. The band struggled to find their footing for years after that, with their next consistently great album being Meddle, which came before DSOTM. If you think you have all the Floyd you need, get Meddle and Piper.

Piper is VERY different that the slick, gorgeous melancholy and anger of '70's Floyd albums. Even if they had never done another album, it would still be one of the greatest psychedelic albums of the '60s.

If you want to get more of the Barret magic, he made two patchy albums in the early '70s. Worth checking out.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Not only was it NOT Animals, there was Dark Side of the Moon before Animals, as well as Meddle, Saucerful of Secrets... at least no one said The Wall!

Actually, there were several albums before their Golden Four as I call it- Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. There was Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma, Obscured by Clouds, Relics (great one to check out if you like Piper, it has a few of the not-on-the-album Syd songs on there), so many others...
