i want to disable my 56k modem card and my firewire card, both pci, to make room for a new ethernet card and usb 2.0 card, how can i disable the first 2 cards to make room for the last 2 on windows xp

disable the hardware activity could be done using the following :
right click on my computer>> choose manage >> on the left white menu choose from the tree "Device manger" >> now u have a list of all installed hardware .. choose what u want, disable it and that's ok ..
otherwise u can remove it manually : open your pc case , with a small experience or maybe many websearch to have the hardware picture .. remove it after reviewing your pc manual maybe will be better .

Turn off the PC, unplug and open the case, remove the 2 old cards and replace with 2 new. Unless, you have 2 MORE slots for the 2 new cards, just add them.

for disabling devices go to control panel> system> hardware tab> device manager. look for the device and disable it.
Follow you new devices installation procedures
