Although I adore Ali, I have to disagree. Most people under the age of 15 have no idea who Muhammed Ali is, although they definitely recognize the names Bush, Bin Laden, Elvis, and Oprah.

I believe you are wrong about him being more famouse than Elvis. There is also the case for Jesus. But most of all I would say that David Beckham is in the running. Manchester United is the most widely followed football team in history, ipso facto, many people world wide would have heard of him. But I don't think he beats Jesus.

Are we counting just live people? Then Elvis would not qualify. And if we are including dead people, I should think Jesus of Nazareth would still hold the title. That is, who is KNOWN, not necessarily worshiped.
