The british government is in control of most things but the EU does have a lot of control over legislation. In addition to that some powers have been devolved to the scottish, welsh and irish parliaments

the EU seem to make all the stupid laws while the american companies move in and take the cash ,
the current british "government" for want of a better word to describe them are not much more than a splinter group of the U.S government

The british government has pretty much total control. The European Union does have laws which it expects the aplicant countries to inforce (some of the laws of very good some are stupid, but never mind).
