Basically it caused the gas in dirigibles to switch from volatile Hydrogen to Helium. Blimps and dirigibles continued to be used, but their usefulness gradually diminished. Of course, there are still some flying, such as for Goodyear, Met-Life, etc.

they immediately halted production of new blimps and shut down the operational ones until they improved them with helium instead of hydrogen, and it really didn't cause anything additional besides a small environmental impact

It ended the zeppelin industry. Even today, how often do you see a blimp? (And a blimp is safe.)
