If you have a CD, put it into your cd drive and itunes should detect the CD and allow you to copy the CD onto the itunes software.

If you have music on your computer, open the music file and itunes, click on the music (or highlight all the music) and drag it into itunes.

Well, you can upload music from CDs you already own. Also, iTunes offers a free single of the week (though they're not very good). Also, there is a way to get music from other people's iPods, but I'm not sure of the details.

you can transfer ipod to ipod

Connect the ipod to computer using firewire or other cable. Ipod should should show up in left sidebar in itunes. To transfer, connect both ipods to computer and drag songs to each other's ipod. drag to library to put on computer. If you only have one cord or port, drag to libray first and switch ipods and drag from library to ipod. (I am just using common sense, I could be incorrect)
