The soil on any land contain nutrients that last for several years but are in unavailable form. When you irrigate the water and soil is mixed and a soil solution is formed and the plant takes up the nutrients as required. If chemical fertilisers are added then it further reacts with the soil and removes more nutrients then it normally does, so a lot of nutrients are drawn from the soil. chemical fertilisers create a imbalance in soil pH which leads to some nutrients being unavailable to the plant. It is very important to have the pH of the soil neutral as it helps in the maximum availibity of nutrients and the plant is not deficient. deficiency leads to disease and pest attack. So the best thing I do is add Farm yard manure. It is a natural and an excellent pH stabiliserThe soil on any land contain nutrients that last for several years but are in unavailable form. My experience is that add lots of decomposed farm yard manure, it has excellent properties to improve physical condition of the soil like water holding, humas, areation increase microbiotic activity etc. I even add oil cakes. chemicals are there but it will always be a temperory solution without the above benefits. My land was stony or rocky with very little fine soil but after what i have done as above, the situation has changed dramatically and all my collection of ornamental and fruit plants/trees are growing luxuriately

To increase your pH by 1.0 point and make your soil more alkaline. Add 4 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in sandy soils Add 8 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in loamy soils Add 12 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in clay soils Add 25 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard in peaty soils To reduce the soil pH by 1.0 point, mix in 1.2 oz of ground rock sulfur per square yard if the soil is sandy, or 3.6 oz per square yard for all other soils. The sulfur should be thoroughly mixed into the soil before planting. Sawdust, composted leaves, wood chips, cottonseed meal, leaf mold and especially peat moss, will lower the soil pH.
