It depends on your tastes, although in Japan they have a genre called "shoujo" (girls) anime that tends to focus on stuff like relationships and romance, and the main character(s) tend to be female. The "shounen" (boys) anime genre on the other hand focuses on action and fighting, and the main character(s) tend to be male.

So it really depends on what you're into.

Some good series (but not necessarily considered "shoujo") that are popular with the ladies are: Kare Kano (aka His & Her Circumstances), Fruits Basket, Super Gals, a lot of stuff by Clamp (ex Cardcaptor Sakura), Ah! My Goddess, Fushigi Yugi, Video Girl Ai, Vision of Escaflowne, and Revolutionary Girl Utena.

You also might want to check out anything by Studio Ghibli - Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Naausica, Kiki's Delivery Service, or My Neighbor Totoro - these are all good movies that both men and women, young and old can enjoy.

If you want movies, any Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli films are really good. My favourite is Spirited Away but i've always like Kiki's delivery service.......maybe because it's the first ghibli movie i've ever watched. There are others like Howl's moving castle, The cat returns, Laputa:Castle in the sky, Princess Mononoke, Nausica, Grave of the fireflies, My neighbour totoro (really cute) and etc. etc.

I also liked the Cowboy Bebop movie: Knockin' on heaven's door. I think that's the title. I've only ever watched two episodeso f cowboy bebop, but i still enjoyed the movie.

anything, really. it - to be quite honest - all just depends on your personality and likes and dislikes.

a lot of movies are spin-offs of the anime. so if you have never seen an anime or read a manga, i suggest you atart with something else.

but one i know you dont have to know the manga/anime to understand is the movie - Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa.

im obvuisly female and i love the Fullmetal Alchemist series.
