I have to do a small wood project (flooring). I want to use the miter saw to do cuts, but, I don't have a stand for it. Is it safe enough for cutting wood strips to do so on the ground? I've seen it done with a table saw, but, never with a miter saw.

Sigh. With no offense meant at all get a couple of milk crates. Take a plank and lay it across two surfaces equal in height for COMFORT to YOU.
Is this a CHOP SAW, electrically powered? Miter saws and boxes are also NON powered.
The idea is that if the TOOL is grounded it won't matter if it's on the "ground" unless the power....connections come in contact with WATER, transfering to the tool, and your body.

Safe, yes, advisable, no. I would like a surface under the chop saw (what we call electric mitre saws) so I ensure the surface below is flat and no rocks and grass get into the blade.
Whenever you use a saw, you have to account for what is under the blade too. In this case, chop saws chop -- so there is some of the blasde running underneath what you see as the platform. You really do not want any encounter, freakish or not, between the blade and a rock, so take care of this issue well ... it'll ruin the blade, and that puppy is expensive (not to mention where the rock will land when it flies).

Why wouldnt it be? Uncomfortable yes. Here is a bright idea. Get a couple saw horses, lay a piece of plywood or some 2x's on it and there you go, you have a table to set the saw on. Are you sure you know how to use that thing?

I've used one on the ground before - the important thing is to make sure the material you are cutting is level.

Sure, but elevate the saw to a level that makes your work more comfortable. Be sure to support both ends of what you are cutting to level so that your cuts are straight. If it is easier for you to use it on the ground, go ahead!

If its an electric saw than you would be better off making a small plywood base for it.

yes it is safe to use on the ground. but make sure you use safety goggles and the wood is secure.at all times.

Sure. Just make sure you have a good pair of knee pads. I use mine on the floor all the time.
