I was ten years old and and alone at home listening to the BBC Home Service (now radio 4) when the newscaster brought the news on the stroke of the hour, that Ruth Ellis was being hanged inside the prison walls. And the long seconds of silence that followed, as she hung, was awful to experience. Since I was born in 1945, it had to be 1955.
I will never forget the solemnity of his voice, nor the awful chill inside of me, because I had also read about the case in the papers that my parents had delivered daily, The Mirror and The Sketch. And I did not believe she should have hung... but then I don't agree with hanging anyway. I was a Christian then, and am a Christian now, so my views have never changed.
But more than this, something in me told me she was driven, that she should have had a better defence, that she was sadly acting out of passion, and that like the French courts allow, there should have allowance for the plea of 'crime of passion'.
When her name is mentioned, I can still recall the awfulness I felt, and the tears I cried alone, for a woman that I never knew.
An eye for an eye, does nothing good for humanity, it did not then, and does not now, convince me ever, that we are showing younger burgeoning democracies, that we in the west, are any wiser than the cave man!

July 1995. She was the last woman to be hanged in Britain, and there was some controversy about the sentence as It was what would be called, a crime of Passion.
