A friend came by my house and told me not to do laundry today. It was really bad. She said that if i did, I could wash someone in my family's soul away. I think she is nuts. Has anyone heard of this or something along the same lines?

I wish I knew more about the origin of this myth because I have heard of it recently, but, I thought it was about January 9th, not today. Apparently some people are into this one.

Oh, i'm not sure, i havn't really heard of washing someones soul away. It might be confusing when people tell u things like that and in ur own mind u have doubts. Just believe what u want to believe and no matter what, things will be ok. : )

I read a thing in The Complete Encyclopedia of Fairies about "Gray Ladies" who are seen washing clothes in a river...but they're actually winding clothes for a corpse or they killed a baby or something. The clothes are bloody and you have to stay away from them or they'll wrap you up and choke you in the fabric.

But I've never heard of your particular version, no.

I did a search on "laundry superstition January" and all I got was references to New Years Day itself -- and none of the ones I've found so far *explain* the superstition. I've provided the best link, below.

guess there was a reason behind the myth. might have started when there was a problem with someone not wanting to do the laundry

No. She is nuts....but that's the best excuse I've ever heard for not doing laundry.

I have heard of this superstition. What I heard was that if someone was gravely ill you did not take their bedsclothes and wash them or you would wash away their weakened spirit.
