The government are finally raising the age limit from 16 to 18 soon, and it couldn't come soon enough. I think they need to reform a lot of the age limits in effect atm. I personally think smoking shouldn't be legal until a person is 21, it's not something that benefits you in any way whatsoever!
Other than that i'd say the same for sex also. Yes, it's a good thing in some respects but people look down on teenagers with children, what they don't realise is that at the end of the day the govt. are in effect saying 16 is old enough to take on the responsibility of having a child...so they really need to raise it so the potential parents are more likely to take into consideration the risks rather than just see it as something they can brag about. My younger sister just turned 16 and she's so immature it scares me.

The age is due to go up to 18 soon, the reason signs say you have to be 21 is so that shopkeepers know for certain that you are at least over 16. So many shops were getting fined for selling ciggs to under 16's that they decided to cover their backs. I could not tell the difference between a 14 yr old and a 16yr old, but I could between a 14 yr old and a 21yr old. Hope you understand what I MEAN.

A lot of pubs and suprmarkets have subscribed to the RU21 scheme. All it means is that if you look under 21 then you are asked to prove your age. It doesnt mean that you need to be 21 to buy them, just that you will be asked to prove you are old enough to buy the product. So if you are 18 and look it, they wll ask you to prove that you are 18.
Its because its much easier to work out if someone is 21 rather than if they are 16 or 18. Anyone over 16 or 18 usually has some proof of ID on them.
If supermarkets/pubs are asking you to prove you are over 21 they have got it wrong.

I recently read that the UK age for purchasing cigs will be raised from 16 to 18 from this October. As for the id check........personally I'd take that as a compliment.

The law changes in October to prohibit the sale of Tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18
The reason you got ID'd is over cautious sellers as the fine is quite high and the law went public this month.
Most of the news headlines concentrated on the change and not when it happened.
When it comes into force it will be ID for those who look under 21 just like alchohol
Goto the BBC or the Dept of Health website for further details

Actually, there is no law about BUYING cigarettes. The law is about selling them. It is currently illegal for a vendor to sell to anyone who is, or is believed to be under the age of 16. This weeks news reports that the age may be increased to 18. Be grateful that you obviously look younger than you are. The vendors are protecting themselves and quite rightly.
