If you are talking about endothermic animals (mammals and birds), they use their metabolism to keep warm. As their cells break down food molecules, they release heat, and this is what keeps them warm. This means that these animals need to eat plenty of high calorie foods if they are to remain active during the cold season.

And in order to conserve this heat, they have things like fur, huddle with others, curl up in a ball, shunting blood to their limbs and ears, etc.

Those animals that can't do all these would hibernate or migrate to warmer areas.
