I had an '88 that went through 3 starters in one year. It ended up being a problem with the teeth on the fly wheel. I had to have that replaced. The part is cheap, but there was a lot of labor involved. Perhaps that is your truck's problem.

Sounds like the starter or the solenoid is bad. On the negative side , there is also the possibility that the engine is blown up and won't crank over no matter what. Try putting a socket on the crankshaft bolt and see if you can turn the engine over by hand. If the engine still turns, try replacing the starter. 1985 was a long time ago and I'll bet that engine has to be pretty tired if it hasn't been rebuilt already, especially if it's a V6. V6 S-10s aren't exactly known for engine durability.

try checking the fuel pump. I may be wrong, but wasn't 85 the first year S-10s started using fuel injection? Anyway, its a common problem with S-10s. But I still love them.

make sure your battery terminals are perfectly clean and try it again and if you are getting juice to the starter and still no go you will have to replace the starter, but before you do that make sure the connections to the starter are clean also.

I was going to say your alternator was stuck, but if it's new,it shouldn't be.Not impossible though...try loosening the tensioner pulley, let the belt flop off,try it then. When the alternator freezes up,it's impossible for the engine to torn over.Good luck.

check the starter, fuel pump, fuel lines, spark plug wires, and check that there is no dirt in the air filter, fuel lines.
