A. Low man on the totem pole, means the lowest position at a work location. A janitor would have a boss, and his boss would have a boss, and his boss would have a boss. The janitor, not being a boss himself, would be the low man on the totem pole. Referencing native american totempoles, with many faces on them. The lowest face, is not 'above' another face. 1. You can't answer this question unless description A above applies to you. 2. Grunt work means the most basic work on the job. The Janitor is doing all the grunt work. While the janitors boss might be providing the map of an area to clean, and processing the janitors time sheet etc. The boss's jobs are not grunt work type jobs. Taking out the trash, and mopping the floor would be grunt work type jobs.
