I really dislike this name. This is NOT one of those old-fashioned gems to make a come-back. The nn Gertie or Gert is equally unattractive. This name sounds very harsh. If you must use, I would suggest using as a middle name only. Two thumbs down.

My husband's aunt's name WAS Gertrude. Her whole life she went by Trudy. When she became an adult, she legally had her name changed from Gertrude to Trudy! This was because she hated her name Gertrude.

Not. When choosing a name remember this child has the name for life and Gertrude is out dated.

I worked with a Gertrude once, people called her dirty gertie. I guess that with a little creativity, one can come up with an evil nickname for anyone, but since you are asking for opinions, I will say "I don't like it" But then again, do you really care what I think??

I don't care what other people say. You can use any name you like. Old or not. I personally like the name Gertrude. It is kind of melodical in a way.

Gertrude is an old sounding name. Not to be funny or anything but i dont think people should give their new babies old sounding names.

Please don't do that to the poor kid. Names go out of fashion for a reason.

Can't you see Gertrude is a little chubby girl with no friends sitting alone on the playground?

I had a great aunt called Gertrude and we called her Gertie for short. It would not be my personal choice but I suppose on the right child would sound quite cute!

I know a couple older people named Gertrude, they call them Gertie for short.
Personally, I wouldn't name my daughter it, but I admire people's decision to use an 'older' name. Other names I put in that category: Mary, Louise, Margaret, Ethel, Helen, Marjorie, etc etc,

it's not common anymore and that's always a good thing. my name is jenifer and that name is everywhere. which is why i'm giving my baby a unique name. don't do the common names, it'll drive the kid crazy. and while she may get made fun of in elementary school, but the time high school hits, everyone will be intrigued by the girl with the mysterious name.
good luck on whatever you decide!! =]

I don't really like it. I don't think it's feminine at all.

Although in the Kevin Smith movie "Jersey Girl" the little girl was named Gertrude and they called her "Gertie". I thought it was cute.

I would never name my kid that though.
