There is a difference between the two though some mistake it for the same and american companies have been labeling the hardcore one as the softcore one.

shounen-ai is translated means boy-love and deals with usually the relationship side of boys/men in love with other males. Usually it isn't about the sexual part though in a few cases sometimes it does. But in general these are the anime and manga that deal more with the relationship between two males then the sexual side.

yaoi on the other hand is the type portraying strong , sometimes erotic themes between men and usually the anime and manga that the story is more about the erotic/sexual relationship between males.

The target audience for both types is females and which is why it usually has a strong female viewership

shounen-ai is boy's love, yaoi is *ahem* a bit more...serious. Although some people just use the word yaoi if it relates to any kind of male/male relationship. P.S: I like your picture. <3

Shounen-ai means "boy love" or BL. It deals with tender relationships between two males, I beleive.

Yaoi is a Japanese acronym for "no plot, no point, etc." or something like that... It is basically hard gay porn, though it may mean something different to every fan.

shounen-ai is manga/anime about gay boys, yaoi is manga/anime for boys. One is sexually oriented, the other one isn't.
