Should I buy one online perhaps on an auction site, or should I go to a store?

In my opinion, i would buy a laptop online direct from a company like dell for example. They always have good deals, and if you happen to purchase something from their company, the price of the shipping will always be excluded. Hope that helps. =)

Check out www.tiger direct.com they sell new and refurbished computers, I have bought a bunch from them over the years the prices are cheap but occasionally I will get a item that needs returned so be sure to read the reviews on the items first for other customer experiance with that item.
You can also check out ebay for used computers occasionly I find a great deal although I get burned on ebay about 1 out of ten purchases so read listing careful and checkout there feedbacks before purchasing also ask the seller questions to resolve any concerns before buying..
For local best buy is not to bad from what I have heard but for my local stuff I go to the wholesale computer stores.

If you know what you want you can get a better deal on the internet, but if you want more info and demonstrations on what it can do a store may be useful (but only as useful as the salespeople are knowlegable.)

One thing i would def recommend for a laptop is an accidental damage policy. It might cost you another 30% of the purchase price but that's better than costing you 100% in the event the "cat" knocks a glass of orange onto it and fries the motherboard.

I have purchased from stores as well as directly from the company I was interested in an I have to say call one of the major companies has been best for me. I got what I wanted and payment was easy. I suggest trying Dell or Mac.

a computer with abode windows 7 now's 0.5 the fee of a macbook professional and with that money you will possibly desire to in all probability get a computer with abode windows 7 that has a intense to mid-selection photos card and speedy processor that could desire to be stable sufficient for college artwork and play some modern-day video games besides. A macbook professional on the comparable value in many situations has decrease specs and might look flashy yet you may get a abode windows 7 computer that seems cool to you, they arrive in all sizes and shapes. So a abode windows 7 computer for that money could be extra extra helpful fee for money extra helpful than the macbook.

Look for sales at electronics stores like BestBuy, at discount retailers like Wal-Mart, and at office stores like Staples. Try it out before you buy it.

Google "Dell refurbished." They are used, but tested and brought up to original specs, and much cheaper.
There are a lot of refurbished sites.
