No don't reformat it. It is the last option to go, only if all others fail.

Don't buy an antivirus software. Avast Home Edition offers you solid protection that most of the paid applications can't offer.

Follow these steps to get rid of your problem.

1. Download Avast Home Edition and install it. Avast is one of the most powerful antivrus solutions available. The best thing is it's free.

Download it at:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Note:- Before installing Avast you have to uninstall all the existing antivirus software.

2. Download the latest update and run it.

Latest update is here.
http://www.avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_vps.html

3. Do a full system scan. Remove all the detected threats.

Now your system is virus free.

4. Download Spyware Terminator and install it. It's also free. It removes spyware (software used to spy on your computer).

Download it at:
http://www.spywareterminator.com/dnl/landing.aspx

Do a full system scan and remove all the detected threats.

5. Now you can start with removing adware. Download AdAware SE Personal Edition and install it. It's free.

Download it here:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

Do a full system scan and remove all the detected threats.

6. Restart your computer.

Now your system should run in optimal conditions.

Good luck !!

Try these before you reformat.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

AVG removes these and more! I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

It depends on which program has more updated "virus definition" files. Any answer is a guess. I would guess the av-xp is right unless the McAfee software is up to date too. Depending on the severity of the infection, it might be best to leave it alone. Anti virus software has become worse than the virus themselves.

I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

AdAware is a wonderful free software, also Avast anti-Virus. Both are free for downloading at www.download.com. I recommend them both, and so do experts.
