Is the Xbox 360 a good multi-media player?

Is the Xbox 360 a good alternative to having to use a DVD player and other equipment in the typical entertainment system setup? Is there software available for download to its hard drive that will allow the playing of various video clips on it (besides DVD's) Thanks.
