Hi there, my wife and I would like to move to Southampton or Portsmouth, she wants to study to become a translator, I need help deciding? ( based on the culture, friendlyness of the people, property market, study options, oppurtunities in construction, basically everything)

I live in Portsmouth. I'm not biased. These are my opinions:
Southampton uni is considerably better than Portsmouth.
Southampton is more crowded than Portsmouth.
Despite any local disagreements the people of both are equally diverse. Some good, some bad. Some nice, some nasty. (If they're football supporters they're at each others' throats).
Southampton is bigger than Portsmouth though, strangely enough, Portsmouth is a city while Southampton isn't.
I don't know about house prices, you would need to consult local estate agents.
I suppose, if I were you, I'd probably live in Pompey but go to Southampton to study.
If I can be of further help, please feel free to email me via my avatar.
Good luck with your move.
PS Things are a bit up in the air at the moment with nobody sure about the future of Portsmouth dockyard. Might be some unemployment problems.

If you should move to Portsmouth and go to Uni in Southampton, dont tell anyone where you live......not a wise choice.
I am from Southampton, have never ever been to portsmouth....coz its something southampton people just dont do....we go to Bournemouth. Southampton has so much history, the people are very friendly, huge shopping centres, brilliant university and very close to the new forest and the isle of wight. Watch the Queen Mary 2 set sail from her home in Southampton and come down to St Mary's to support a team who will be back in the premiership come the end of this season.
