sometimes they do, some crematoriums have strict regs on what can be in the coffin at time of cremation. usually i think people forget to bring them for the deceased. Also undertakers dress a lot of the deceased in clothes supplied by the funeral directors which never include shoes - probably cost cutting! also when the deceased is placed in the coffin the lining of the coffin is brought up over the body up to the waste, called presentation

Where have you seen this?
You may have been privy to the funeral home "cutting corners" by leaving the shoes off because no one will see the feet.
Or, it could have been at the request of the dying person. Some people have requests before dying of how they'd like to be dressed in the coffin or how they'd like to go.

At school I was taught by Marist Brothers, ( Catholic Monks) They had soft felt slippers on their feet, in their coffins, so as to have warm feet as they trod the steps to heaven! People being cremated may not have them.

This is all a matter of preference by the family. If they wish to have shoes on their loved one, we put them on. If they don't or didn't bring any, it really makes no differnce, but I always make sure that they have something on their feet, socks or slippers. Hope this helps!
