I don't I own tons of reptiles and if I were to get to the point where my snakes got to big for me to care for I would donate them to the zoo or a center like that. Pythons can be great pets.

I personally own a python and a boa and I can tell you that I do NOT plan on letting either one loose. I know the python can very well reach up to 6 feet and the boa can come close to 10-12 feet in length. I am prepared to keep both for the next 20-30 years until they pass away.
Most of the time when you see one in the news that is loose it has either escaped (to which it is not the owners fault) or it has been released. The only reason that I can think of to release a snake is because the proper research was not done before the snake was bought. If this is the case then when a snake is full grown it can be overwhelming. Imagine going to the pet store and buying a 12" snake and having the store worker tell you it will only get 3-4' long. Then a few years later you have a 10' snake. This kind of thing happens all the time. Owners do not research and pet stores just want to make a sale.
Also other people are not at risk if a large snake is loose. There have been NO confirmed cases of a human being eaten by a snake. Though the neighborhood dogs and cats need to worry. And if you stay away from it, it can not bite you. Snakes do not chase people down to bite them.
These animals, if born in captivity, were not ment to be wild. That is like saying that dogs, cats, or any other animal is ment to be wild. If it was in the wild then, yes, I agree it should stay there. However most are born in captivity.
Lastly, unless you have several loose snakes or snakes like the one that got loose it is very unlikely that they will 'breed with others and soon we have a lot'. Snakes only breed during certain times in the year and they also need a mate of the same or similar type. So unless you have native snakes like the loose one you have nothing to worry about. And no snakes do not just need to be shot!
And please do not judge people that own snakes as all being ignorant. Yes, some are. But others are not. And classifying everyone as ignorant is, indeed, ignorant itself.

as the owner of a 4ft ball python i am amused by your question. Not all pythons get loose and start going on a mating spree to try and take over the town. I'm willing to bet that the snake wasn't set loose but rather escaped from their enclosure. How big was this python that got loose? Because you say under 10 ft i'm going to laugh right back in your face. Second is it a common occurrence where you live that snakes get loose? And pythons AREN'T DANGEROUS little girl so get your facts straight & go watch Snakes on a Plane if you want to see dangerous snakes. Your lack of intelligence shows how smart and immature you really are. Have a nice day!!!

All animals are meant to be wild. Lets jail all irresponsible pet owners - the ones that don't walk their dogs, train them, let their cats out loose, can't afford a veterinarian. There are ignorant people everywhere that put us all at risk. There ARE responsible pet owners out there. And as for wondering why people own such things as pythons - some people are allergic to anything with fur. A reptile is an alternative for them. Don't let the stupid people in your town affect the way you see the world. (why are there so many loose snakes in your town that they're breeding?)

I don't think you can categorize all large snake owners as irresponsible.
We own many large snakes and have for many years now.. Burmese Pythons, Rock Pythons, Reticulated Pythons and none have ever gotten loose nor have we ever let any loose. We have snakes that are 16 feet long and some that weigh 100+ pounds.
As far as snakes that are meant to be in the wild..If the people already own snakes, how can they then be put in the wild? That is telling everyone to go ahead and let the snakes go.The same thing you are saying should not be happening. Many snakes are born and raised in captivity.. they should NOT be in the wild.
Patrick is 100% correct. Couldn't have said it better myself!

People own large snakes so guys like me can, first of all, Get large snakes for free. I own, among other large snakes, 2 Burmese Pythons, the smallest of witch it 18 feet long. secondly if people stopped buying snakes that would get huge, i would be out of a job. No I don't sell snakes, intact just the opposite. i go to schools and and educate kids on the responsibilities of owning snakes and other reptiles, and encourage people not to buy large reptiles. I uses the snakes to teach people. now as for your other arguments, lets see, there are more loose, pet rabbits, rats, cats, dogs, birds(the list goes on and on and on) than there are snakes, and i don't see you up in arms about that. there are more dog attacks where i live each year, than there are snake attacks in the entire country. as for your statement about all these animals were meant to be wild any way...well that just proves that your I.Q. is smaller than your shoe size. all animals were wild animals to begin with, we domesticated them. so you had one large snake in your town, python I'm guessing, so what is it going to reproduce with? Pythons are not native to the US. the chances of finding another python in your town is slim to none, unless you live in the everglades. so should we fine and jail every on the lets their dog get loose. i can guarantee that the vast majority of dog owners have had a dog get loose once in their life.
Moral of the story, pick your battles, and get the facts, before you post it on the net for some one to make you look like an idiot.

hi there
accidents happen sometimes and i know some ppl do not do the responsible thing but not all of us ... not all pythons grow huge ...there is only 3 that do ...reticulated,rock,and burmese pythons and the rest are under 6 feet ...like the ball and children's python etc. ....just like some boa's grow big but not all ... just be cause ppl choose to keep a snakes even though other ppl don't like them .. doesn't mean they are bad... it no difference then ppl owning a pit bull or mastiff dog which u here more often them killing or mangle someone including their owners or the owners kids yet ppl own them.... so please don't dis snakes ....

Well, it's not always the owner's fault if they get loose. Accidents happen. It would be more reasonable to fine them if they let it happen more than once, don't you think?
I guess people own them for status symbols, because they think they're cool, and because some people are stupid and don't do their homework about pets they buy.
