I'd say the initial invention of the sport in 1891 by James Naismith. This was the start of a different sport, a sport that would later be one of the number one sports of America. Did you know that they originally used peach baskets(Jewel, Dominicks, you know) and hung them to a wall and shot a ball into it. Whenever it stayed in, that was a point. This sport has been modified to what we now see today.

Magic Johnson and the Showtime Lakers. A 6' 9" point guard who played backup center for his first championship. He took the game of basketball to a new level of national attention, especially coupled with rivals of Larry Byrd and Detroit Bad Boys. He made basketball exciting to the non-basketball fans with his no look passes and leadership. I believe that it was during his era that basketball became nationally televised prime time.

Yes, Jordan was the greatest individual athlete in basketball, and Jordan elevated the popularity of basketball beyond imagination, with his insane dunks. But without Magic setting the stage, Jordan probably would not have been more popular than Oscar Robertson or Jerry West.

Bill Russell would have revolutionized basketball defensive concepts with or without Wilt Chamberlain. He has been doing it since he was college in San Francisco. Player salary. I think Wilt is the first if not one of the first to hire a sports agent/lawyer to negotiate his contracts. Him and Russell were the ones who catapulted the NBA from a financially strapped bush league to Major League status and to a national audience.

Jordan by far, not only what he did in america but when he played international ball, I remember seeing a quote from one player, that called him jesus in basketball shoes, or something of that effect. Other countries national teams star players were going to him after games begging for autographs. He globalized basketball as a big time sport, every body in the world wanted to grow up and be like mike

David Stern brialliant marketing schemes. The way he marketed the game and the PLAYERS (even Jordan would have been nothing if NBA was not marketed correctly) when he took the title of commish was the greatest thing that elevated the game. Look at the NHL, great players, great game, but marketed incorrectly.
