As I understood the movie --- he was already there.
In his former life. This explains, that he doesn't want to
leave the Overlook-hotel and he fights like a bull to
defense the hotel. Bull = Torro = Jack Torrence*
*Kubrick's secret message: the names !!!
Remember "Strangelove..." or "Lolita" — it's always
the names....

I always wondered about that too.I read the book and it wasn't the way the book ended.I think maybe they were implying that when he died he was became part of the Overlook's past.Or maybe that he had been there in a previous life. Not sure,But Jack played a great part in that movie.

I always thought that Jack's character has always been around and reincarnated over and over. He comes back to the Overlook hotel to commit murder every time....

I saw the movie, so no harm to me. But don't you think it would have been considerate to post the detail in "additional detail" and NOT in the main part of your question?
It doesn't "represent" anything. If you couldn't figure it out, you weren't watching the movie. Not rocket science, just a fun twist.
